Pair of Antique Tekke Turkmen Torbas, Turkmenistan, Central Asia

Item Ref

It is unusual to find a pair of Torbas (personal belongings bags) as they are often found split up these days. However, they were made as pairs, to be hung on eack flank of the camel during long migrations and to carry small personal possessions.
This pair were made by Tekke Turkmen tribes in Turkmenistan around the last quarter of the 19th century and came out of an old English country house where they had been hung for many decades. They are both in very good condition - complete with original flatwoven backs and long tassels - albeit a little ragged! Nevertheless, a pair of very attractive bags which would make most attractive wall hangings.
Size of each:- 1.02m x 0.66m incl. tassels
(3' 4" x 2' 2" incl. tassels).
Viewing by appointment only.
