antique saddlecover shahsevan tribes azerbaijan

Antique Saddle-Cover, Shahsevan Tribes, Azerbaijan

Item Ref

This magnificent knotted saddle-cover, shows the opening for the cantle and virtually unseen, a small slit for the pommel. The cover was made by Shahsevan tribes in the Moghan region of Azerbaijan during the third quarter of the 19th century with good vegetable dyes. The majority of Shahsevan horse trappings tend to be highly intricate flatwoven horse covers but in this saddle cover, we find a rare and very collectable knotted-pile weaving. It is in very good condition bar only two small re-weaves on each side of the cantle.
Size: 91cm x 76cm (3' 0" x 2' 6").
Viewing by appointment only.
