18th Century Chodor Turkmen Main Carpet, Turkmenistan, Central Asia

Item Ref

In this wonderful and complete Chodor main carpet, we have the proto-type, dating to the 18th century. The carpet is in excellent condition for its age and was found last year in the old English country home of a deceased collector of Turkmen rugs and trappings. Note the near complete flatwoven skirts at each end - very rarely found as few survived. The background colour of this magnificent carpet is aubergine on which the Chodor tribal crest or gol is displayed.
This is an extremely important and rare example of early work of the Chodor tribe.
Size: 3.33m x 1.94m (10' 11" x 6' 4").
Viewing by appointment only.
Internal Ref: BM659
