Antique Prayer Rug, Timuri Tribes, Western Afghanistan

Item Ref

What a fabulous little rug! Made by Timuri tribes in western Afghanistan during the last quarter of the 19th century, the rug has a wonderful colour palette of natural-dye wool with highlights of silk which can be seen in the mihrab and in the stylised 'trees' depicted in the hand-panels (see the close-up images). The central field is knotted in natural undyed camel-hair and the overall feel of the woollen pile is soft and velvety. The beautiful brocaded skirts remain at both ends. A wonderful example of Timuri work as well as being unusually small.
Size: 1.30m x 0.82m (4' 3" x 2' 8").
Viewing by appointment only.
Internal Ref: BM837
