antique turkmen chuval yomut tribe transcaspian steppes turkmenistan central asia

Antique Turkmen Chuval, Yomut Tribe, Trans-Caspian Steppes, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

Item Ref

The chuval (bedding-bag) depicts a field design of tribal guls surrounded by a border with an extra panel at the bottom.
Symbolically, I believe the central field of guls to represent paradise and the lower panel to represent the earthly world.
Therefore, note the two stylised figures leaving the earthly world, where they have passed away, and disappearing under the border and out into the world of the spirit. The dark aubergine background has tremendous depth and I love the sky-blue shining out of the minor guls - glowing in a dark sky! Made by Yomut tribes around the last quarter of the 19th century.
Size: 1.20m x 0.67m (4' 0" x 2' 2").
Viewing by appointment only.
Internal Ref: BM1289
