Item Ref

This little vanity-bag - 'chanteh' in Persian - was woven by Qashqa'i nomads around the second half of the 19th century. One side is foinely woven in soumack technique - probably the front face - the other face has a combination of soumack work and plain-weave in a zig-zag design - quite possibly the symbolic representation of flowing water - a necessity in the everyday lives of these nomadic peoples.
Size: 20cm (8") square.
Viewing by appointment only.
Internal Ref: BM1288
