The 'engsi' was made as a door hanging at the entrance to the Turkmen yurt and symbolically represented the gateway to Paradise, thus the extra lower skirt ('elem') which represented the sky door and central cross dividing the field into the 4 symbolic gardens.
All Turkmen tribes made an engsi - this one made by Ersary Turkmen circa 1880.
The overall condition is very good with some areas of slight wear and a few small expert repairs and this is reflected in the price.
