This 'soumak' flatweave is made up of four individual panels expertly sewn together to make this magnificent flatweave rug or hanging. The four panels were originally made by Shahsevan nomads in the Moghan region of Azerbaijan in the 19th century, to form a 'mafrash' - a large bedding-bag which had been taken apart in the distant past and utilised as a rug. Each panel contains stylised peacocks symbolising immortality and divine protection.
It now makes a very decorative wall-hanging or alternatively, a very hard-wearing floor rug.
