Just in, this gorgeous little Teke Turkmen wedding rug, made in the Akhal Oasis during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
Wedding rugs were made, as the name implies, specifically for the marriage ceremony, on which the bride and groom would stand and take their wedding vows. These small square wedding rugs were highly-prized possessions, never intended for commercial sale, and some of the finest weaving went into these special rugs.
This rug contains four vertical rows of seven small 'chuval' guls or Teke tribal crests highlighted in cochineal, on a stunning madder-red ground, complete with beautiful full 'elems' (skirts) at each end and finished off with plain-weave. The rug is in excellent overall condition.
Size: 1.22m x 1.12m (4' 0" x 3' 8").
Viewing by appointment only.
