Item Ref

Another superb Shahsevan salt-bag, this time in knotted-pile on the face and horizontal bands of plain-weave on the back, and made by Shahsevan nomads in the Moghan Steppe around the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Stunning in its simplicity with an ivory '8-pointed star' in the centre - a symbol of happiness, fertility and masculinity. Note around the lozenge in the neck of the bag, four 'quincunx' or dice-fives - these symbolise protection against the evil eye.
Size: 48cm x 40cm (1' 7" x 1' 4").
Viewing by appointment only.
