Antique Yomud Turkmen Main Carpet, Central Asia

Item Ref

A truly stunning Yomud Turkmen main carpet incorporating the so-called 'dyrnak-gul' pattern. The 'elems' or skirts at each end contain wonderful stylised 'trees-of-life' - a symbol of eternal life in many cultures and also amongst the Turkmen tribes. I acquired this carpet last week from the same old country house as the others, where it had been hanging in a large stairwell for over 20 years. It is in very good condition bar some minor wear in the elems but, as you might imagine, in need of a good bath after all this time on the wall! I estimate the carpet to be somewhere in the mid 19th century - maybe earlier - based on the interesting and archaic use of the guls and symbolic filler motifs.
Size: 3.12m x 1.85m (10' 3" x 6' 1").
Viewing by appointment only.
