Antique Qashqa'i Gabbeh, Fars Province, South-West Persia. ...

Item Number
BM1201

This magnificent Gabbeh carpet was made by Qashqa'i tribes in south-western Persia circa 1900-1910. The wool quality is like silk-velvet - all vegetable dyes - and an unusual design of lozenges containing pre-Islamic crosses, symbolically for breaking down evil into four parts. Interestingly, the crosses also form a '5' - another protective symbol. Either side of the lozenges and next to the inner border, are depicted two indigo-blue stylised 'trees-of-life' - representing the 3-level universe to these nomads. This is an incredible carpet in mint condition.
Size: 2.51m x 1.91m (8' 3" x 6' 3").

This finely knotted rug of the Qashqa'i nomads was made circa 1870-1880. The overall condition is very good, bar a small amount of mordant corrosion in the dark-brown dyed central field. The design in the central field is elegantly drawn and the ivory border is most attractive with its row of stylised botehs.
Size: 1.83m x 1.22m (6' 0" x 4' 0").

Qashqa'i Tribes, South-West Persia

Item Number
BM521

A rare and quite unique Qashqa'i rug in the style of the designs used by Baluch nomads in the Ferdows region of south-eastern Persia. The rug, of course, is undoubtedly Qashqa'i and I would hazard a guess that it was made by the Shekarlu tribe within that confederacy. It is in very good condition but with some minor wear in places. It was made circa 1880, with stunning, saturated vegetable colour throughout.
Size: 1.52m x 1.12m (5' 0" x 3' 8").

Antique Qashqa'i- Shekarlu Rug, Fars province, South-West ...

This rug is truly fantastic. Not only is it amazing, it is in wonderful condition with complete brocaded skirts and braided warp-ends. The rugs of the Shekarlu sub-tribe are relatively rare and this one is no exception with its brick-red field (blue fields are more common) and more unusual borders than most. Made by the Qashqa'i-Shekarlu tribe around 1850 in Fars Province, south-west Persia.

Item Number
BM/SK

A rare, small size rug of the Shekarlu sub tribe, made around 1880. The majority of Shekarlu rugs are in large format size and it is very unusual to find small format rugs of this sub-tribe of the Qashqa'i Confederacy. The main border is typically Shekarlu - powerfully framing the indigo-blue field with its myriad of quadrupeds and flowers. In very good condition, the rug is only in need of a good bath - arranged for this coming week.

Antique Afshar Tribal Rug, Sirjan Region, Kerman ...

Item Number
BM1215

This magnificent Afshar tribal rug I found recently in an old English country house and I was sure it had never seen the light of day, never mind its filthy state! This was an exciting find as I knew that a good bath would bring up the glorious vegetable colours - and, as you can see from the photos, it certainly did! This is an early example of Afshar work - probably circa 1860-1870, made by Afshar nomads in the Sirjan region of southern Persia. The rug is complete with long plain-weave and brocaded skirts each end and overall is in good condition.
Size: 1.68m x 1.35m (5' 6" x 4' 5").

Antique Qashqa'i Rug, Kashkuli Sub Tribe, Fars ...

Item Number
BM701

This beautiful 19th century Qashqa'i-Kashkuli rug was acquired recently from an old English country house. It's a beautiful piece with evenly low pile but with several holes and poor old re-weaves throughout which will require about 500 spent on it. I have had the rug professionally washed and the price reflects its current state. The wonderful old natural colours are stunning.
Size: 2.14m x 1.22m (7' 0" x 4' 0").

Antique Tribal Rug 'masnad', Afshar Tribes, ...

Item Number
BM1186

Just magnificent! A very fine, rare small rug, probably made as a 'masnad' - a very special rug made as a ceremonial king's rug. When the king had no access to the royal throne, a small rug called a masnad substituted for the throne. The myriad of well-fed chickens depicted in the central indigo-blue field are generally associated with the nomads of the Khamseh Confederacy, but here we see the chickens rarely depicted in an Afshar piece! Very special indeed.

Antique Qashqa'i Rug, Fars Province, South West ...

Item Number
BM730

This is one of the oldest Qashqa'i rugs I've seen. I would take a good guess that it dates to the first half 19th century - a rare find these days! Although in poor condition with wear and some old, poor re-weaves and re-woven ends, the rug has a wonderful archaic look to it that pre-dates the more 'commonly known' late 19th century Qashqa'i rugs. From the weave structure, I feel that it might have been made by the Bolvardi sub-tribe of the Qashqa'i Confederacy. Ignoring condition issues, this is a rare and highly collectable example of early Qashqa'i work and would make a beautiful wall-hanging.
Size: 1.62m x 1.10m (5' 4" x 3' 7").

Antique Afshar Tribal Rug, Neiriz, Kerman Province, ...

BM965

I love the fabulous shades of madder-red, indigo-blues and turquoise in this beautiful rug, made by Afshar tribes in the Neiriz area of Kerman province circa 1880-1900. The borders capture a small piece of paradise - vases of flowers with symbolic birds atop - carriers of the soul from the earthly world to the realms of the spirit! In very good condition.
1.83m x 1.42m (6' 0" x 4' 8").

Antique Afshar Rug, Afshar Tribes, South Persia ...

Item Number
BM720

This rare little Afshar rug was originally sold by me in the early 1990s and it has just been acquired back. It is published in my book 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' under 'Afshar Tribes' and is the only one I have seen to date with this unusual, archaic field design of 4 large shrub-like motifs. I believe this is an early weaving of the Afshar - possibly around the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It is, overall, in good condition although there are small areas of a little wear. This is a very collectable rug.
Size: 1.50m x 1.00m ( 5' 0" x 3' 3").

Just acquired, this fabulous Qashqa'i rug, made by the Kashkuli nomads around 1870, has fantastic natural colours, particularly the glowing sky-blue field with its water-garden design.

The rug is in good condition with a rare pale yellow field incorporating a tree-of-life and birds are depicted sitting on the branches. The deep indigo-blue border powerfully frames the central field.
