Antique Gabbeh, Lor - Boyer Ahmadi Tribe, ...

Item Number
BM987

Here is a truly fabulous gabbeh made by the Boyer Ahmadi Lor tribe around the last quarter 19th century. The rug is full of symbolic representation and a delifghtful array of small stylised birds and animals. I love the little tribal woman in the centre with short legs!
Gabbehs are now rare. They were used and I suppose abused, in tribal life as everyday floor rugs and for wrapping up children during the cold winter nights, thus few have survived.
Size: 2.24m x 1.37m (7' 4" x 4' 6").

Old Gabbeh, Luri Tribes, Luristan, Western Persia ...

Item Number
BM857

A charming old Gabbeh from the first half 20th century, made by Luri tribes in Luristan, western Persia. I love the happiness of the piece - obviously the young weaver was having fun incorporating dancing nomadic women, butterflies, goats or gazelle and flowers. Butterflies must have played an important role in her life at the time she made this gabbeh as they also feature in the border design. Gabbehs were generally of loose weave, made specifically for everyday use in the tents and for wrapping up children during the long, cold winter nights. Today, 19th century gabbehs are rare due to their short life after which they were simply discarded and new pieces made.
Size: 1.93m x 1.35m (6' 4" x 4' 5").

Antique Bakhtiari Rug, Western Persia

Item Number
BM370

Thiis stunning and archaic rug was made by Bakhtiari nomads during the second half of the 19th century in western Persia. The compartmentalised design is an early drawing from this area - look at similar designs of later Bakhtiari rugs and you will observe degeneration - particularly in the commercialised rugs of the 20th century. In this beautiful rug, note the main border design which is a reminder of the borders in Shirvan rugs from the eastern Caucasus - quite amazing!
Size: 2.00m x 1.22m (6' 6" x 4' 0").

Antique Bakhtiari Tribal Rug, The Chahar Mahal, ...

Item Number
MAC48

This is a true example of pure nomadic work by Bakhtiari nomads in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia. The wool is soft and lustrous and the overall condition is excellent bar some very minor wear in the top main border and a few old repairs in the field - completely invisible on the surface. The indigo-blue field appears to contain palmettes - freely drawn with spontaneity of design and surrounding the field, a powerful ivory border depicting stylised fish swimming around a water lily. I love the whole appearance of this wonderful rug with its slightly wider ivory border on the left side! Charming.
Size: 2.13m x 1.27m (7' 0" x 4' 2").
