Description

Small, square Qashqa'i rugs are uncommon and this charming rug contains the 'scorpion' in the central ivory lozenge. The scorpion symbol was used a great deal by the Qashqa'i tribes and its purpose was to keep live scorpions from entering the central field of the rug! Having sat on similar types of rugs with scorpion symbols during my stay amongst the Qashqa'i, I can say that sometimes the scorpions kept well away and at other times, were brave enough to enter!!
This elegant small rug was made around 1880 and is in good condition albeit with some areas of slight wear.
Size: 157m x 1.32m (5' 2" x 4' 4").
Viewing by appointment only.
