Description
This magnificent salt-bag - 'namakdan' in Persian - was woven by the Owlad Haj Ali sub-tribe of the Bakhtiari-Lor tribes in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia during the last quarter of the 19th century.
This namakdan is woven in soumak technique on the face and comprises stylised birds and tulips. The back is woven in narrow, horizontal bands of plain-weave in a variety of fabulous natural colours. The bag is complete with goat-hair bound selvedges and braided hanging cords with cowrie shells symbolising good luck.
