antique kurdish storagebagface jaf nomads kurdistan

Antique Kurdish Storage-Bagface, Jaf Nomads, Kurdistan.

Item Ref

This stunning and powerful weaving was once the face of a large storage-bag, used for containing bedding during long migrations, and made by Jaf-Kurd nomads during the second half of the 19th century. Although its back is missing, this bag-face is probably now more versatile as a floor rug, being in full pile and excellent condition. The weaver has used a beautiful selection of vegetable colours including deep indigo-blue and a gorgeous green. Four powerful Jaf 'guls' (tribal crests) dominate the central field with double-headed sunbirds in the lower elem or skirt. A truly magnificent example of 19th century Kurdish weaving at its best.
