antique prayerrug timuri tribes borderlands of east persiawest afghanistan

Antique Prayer-Rug, Timuri Tribes, Borderlands of East Persia/West Afghanistan.

Item Ref

An amazing 19th century prayer-rug of the Timuri tribes, inhabiting the borderlands of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan and made circa 1870-1880.
The field comprises a natural camel-hair background with a very stylised 'tree-of-life' rising upwards and symbolising the 3-level universe. What is unusual in this small rug is the main border design which is more often found on large carpets of the Timuri. Another rare and interesting symbol is the fern or tree-like motif found on either side of the central tree. The remains of the chevron kilim ends can be seen at the bottom of the rug.
Size: 1.53m x 0.96m (5' 0" x 3' 2").
Viewing by appointment only.
