Item Ref

A stunning 'tree-of-life' dominates the field of this early nomadic rug made by Kurdish tribes in Kurdistan during the mid 19th century. Sky-blue, dark-blue, golden yellow, turquoise and madder-red provide the colours to this powerful tree with the main red border containing the strongly symbolic 'quincunx' pattern.
With evenly-low pile all over and two minor re-weaves in the lower kilim skirt, this is a rare and early surviving example of true Kurdish nomadic weaving.
Size: 2.26m x 1.24m (7' 5" x 4' 1").
Viewing by appointment only.
