Antique Baluch Tribal Rug, Sistan Province, South-East ...

Item Ref
BM/IG3

A rare and beautiful Baluch tribal rug in excellent condition made in the Sistan region circa 1880.
Another rug I have been reunited with recently and after 30 years of being enjoyed elsewhere, it is lovely to have it back in the fold!
The unusual ground colour resembles burnt-orange with three central rectangles comprising 'Mushwani' type lozenges. Very finely knotted, the outer 'laleh abassi' border is beautifully drawn and frames the rug in the most stunning way. It is complete with short kilim skirts each end.
Size: 1.70m x 0.94m (5' 7" x 3' 1").

Antique Storage-Bag, Qashqa'i Nomads, Fars Province, South-West ...

Item Ref
BM2276

Illustrated in my 3rd edition 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent', this magnificent storage-bag or 'khour' in Persian, was woven in intricate complementary weft-weave technique by Qashqa'i nomads during the last quarter of the nineteenth century in Fars Province, south-west Persia.
The work, as described in my book, is exemplary, bearing in mind the bag was an everyday utilitarian item, used to contain and transport clothes, bedding, pots and pans etc. and shows the skill and artistry that went into making these bags. The sides, handles and loops at the top are bound in strong goat-hair for resilience.
This is a rare and beautiful work of nomadic art which has been in my personal collection for many years and to which I have now decided to part with - rather sadly!
Size: 90cm x 69cm (3' 0" x 2' 3").

Another reunited Baluch rug sold over 30 years ago and nice to have it back. It has a beautiful madder-red ground with an overall small lozenge pattern, disappearing under the borders and out into infinity. The main border has a relatively typical Baluch continuous vine leaf symbolising the eternal cycle of life.
A very elegant and nicely-drawn rug, made circa 1880 in Khorassan province of north-eastern Persia.
Size: 2.00m x 1.20m (6' 6" x 4' 0").

Antique Turkmen Chuval, Ersary Tribes, Middle Amu ...

Item Ref
BM2071

This large chuval - storage bag - was made by Ersary Turkmen tribes in the middle Amu Darya region of Turkmenistan during the third quarter of the nineteenth century.
Although its flat-woven back was removed at some point in the past, the face of this chuval is in very good complete condition. Originally made in pairs for transporting clothing and other personal belongings, this sadly, is the only one remaining, with no doubt, the other pair to this somewhere out there in the wide world!
The beautiful madder-red ground contains three vertical rows of five Ersary 'guls' (tribal crests) and particularly attractive is the main border with its compartmentalised pattern containing '8-pointed stars' - protective symbols. Note also the interesting change of colour in the 'elem' or skirt, undoubtedly done on purpose by the weaver to highlight the symbolic earthly world.
Size: 0.95m x 1.45m (3' 1" x 4' 9").

An Antique Pair of Qashqa'i Saddle-Bags, Fars ...

Item Ref
BM/QSB

A most unusual pair of Qashqa'i tribal saddle-bags - sadly split - made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars province circa 1900. Particularly interesting and attractive is the depiction of stylised deer or gazelle in the main ivory border, something I haven't seen before.
Both bags are in good condition with original plain-weave backs and on each face, a lovely array of beautiful, warm colours with soft, glossy wool. Within the red central lozenge of each bag, is depicted the Qashqa'i emblem which I was told when I spent several months with the tribe back in the early 1970s, symbolised a scorpion.
The price quoted is for the pair but I am prepared to sell each bag separately, if one only was required.
Size of each bag: 62 x 57cm (2' 0" x 1' 10").

Antique Turkmen Torba, Sariq Tribe, Yolatan Oasis, ...

Item Ref
BM/Sariq

The Turkmen 'torba' was either a small storage-bag or in this case, a wedding camel decoration.
Made during the last quarter of the 19th century by Sariq tribes in the Yolatan Oasis region of Turkmenistan, this beautifully made trapping contains highlights of cochineal-dye silk throughout, indicating it was quite possibly a prized dowry presentation piece. The silk highlights can be seen as light-coloured areas in the photos.
The torba is complete and in excellent condition.
Size: 1.35m x 0.38m (4' 5" x 1' 3").

Antique Half Saddlebag-Face, Timuri Tribes, Khaf Region, ...

Item Ref
BM2244

This beautiful and unusual half saddlebag-face depicts two stylised camels above the central rosette on a stunning abrash of indigo-blue. The rosettes, highlighted in madder-red, create a large quincunx or '5' symbol in the central field symbolising protection. Note also the small ivory rosettes numbering 5 in the upper section of the field and 5 in the lower section!
Made by Timuri tribes in the region of Khaf in the borderlands of north-eastern Persia and north-western Afghanistan during the last quarter of the 19th century. This half bag-face would originally have been part of a double saddlebag, damaged and reduced to provide two halves in the distant past. The complete remains of the lappits remain at the top of the bag-face.
Size: 76cm x 76cm (2' 6" x 2' 6")
