Antique Bread Sofreh, Baluch Tribes, Khorassan Province, ...

Item Ref
BM1985

This magnificent, finely woven and knotted-pile bread sofreh has been in my personal collection for a few years. It is one of the best of type that I've come across in 40 years of dealing and collecting.
The central aubergine field is in fine plain-weave technique and it is surrounded by a very finely knotted-pile border containing the continuous vine, symbolising the eternal cycle of life.
Bearing in mind it was made during the second half nineteenth century, this sofreh is in remarkable condition and is complete with brocade and plain-weave 'elems' or skirts.

Antique Armenian Rug, Armenia.

Item Ref
BM1983

Dated 1919 and inscribed in old Armenian the word 'May', the weaver of this rare and unusual rug has used a mixture of natural red wool skeins which creates wonderful movement throughout the field. In a way, it looks like a sunrise or sunset, where the lower dark red area of the field depicts the earth and the lighter shades of red at the top shows the light of the sun either rising or sinking in the month of May!
Two quadrupeds are depicted in the lower half and below them, two birds, symbolically the cariers of the soul from the earthly world to the realms of the spirits, observing a tiny star just above them!
The powerful main border contains large 'botehs' - purported to be either pine-cones or flame symbols.
The rug has an evenly-low woollen pile but certainly strong enough to use on the floor with underlay in a quiet space.
Size: 2.53m x 1.37m (8' 4" x 4' 6").

In excellent condition and dating to circa 1880, this charming little rug retains its original plain-weave ends.

Antique Kurdish Rug, Kurdish Tribes, Eastern Anatolia. ...

Item Ref
BM2011

This most unusual rug was made by Kurdish tribes in eastern Anatolia during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. With a fairly limited colour palette but with spectacular glossy wool, the indigo-blue ground contains a large red central rectangle containing various symbols including, in the centre, a double-headed birds-head symbol. Emanating from both ends are four smaller lozenges.
Although the colour palette is limited, the two minor borders are highlighted in ivory wool and a stunning aubergine colour is used throughout. This rug, which is in excellent condition, has to be seen to be fully appreciated.
Size: 1.60m x 1.22m (5' 3" x 4' 0").

Antique Qashqa'i Rug, Shesh Boluki Sub-Tribe, Fars ...

Item Ref
BM2047

I love natural indigo-blue ground rugs, particularly where the wool used is exceptional and the blue glows like oil floating on water. This rug has to be seen to fully appreciate the gorgeous shades of blue, covered by a myriad of stylised flowers or shrubs. The main border has a powerful rendition of stylised trees on a natural un-dyed ivory background framing the field.
This rug, which I suspect was made by the Shesh-Boluki sub-tribe within the Qashqa'i confederacy, was made circa 1900 and is in very good overall condition with no repairs.
Size: 2.06m x 1.22m (6' 9" x 4' 0").

Antique Prayer-Rug, Timuri - Yaqoub Khani Tribe, ...

Item Ref
BM2012

Beautifully balanced design of 'trees-of-life' rising upwards on a natural undyed, camel-ground field, from the underworld to the branches symbolising the world of the spirit.
Made by the Yaqoub Khani Timuri during the last quarter of the 19th century, the rug is in excellent condition, albeit with some very tiny repairs, and is complete with its brocaded and slit-tapestry skirts at either end.
The wool quality is amazing, soft and silky, and this rug would make an amazing wall-hanging.
A truly beautiful prayer-rug which needs to be seen to fully appreciate the subtle natural colours.
Size: 1.55m x 0.84m (5' 1" x 2' 9").

Made in the Khorassan region of north-east Persia by Baluch tribes circa 1880 to 1900, the rug has an overall unusual field design of small shrubs and also an uncommon main madder-red border. In very good condition.
I have decided to take a few more photos in daylight in order to try and show the beautiful colours.

Antique 'Ru Korssi', Timuri Tribes, Borderlands of ...

Item Ref
BM2102

The 'Ru Korssi' was a flat-woven decorative cover for the 'mangal' - a wooden frame placed in the tent or mud-brick dwelling under which bowls of burning charcoal were placed. The mangal was then covered with blankets and on the very top, was place the symbolic, decorative cover, the ru korssi.
This stunning ru korssi was woven by Timuri tribes during the last quarter 19th century and incorporates three 'trees-of-life' in the central natural aubergine ground and on either side protected by powerful borders.
The horizontal borders at the top and bottom contain one border line in knotted-pile. Also note at the very bottom of the aubergine field, two differing symbols on either side of the central tree.
I believe this represents the male and female symbols representing eternal life and fertility.
Size: 1.52m x 1.42m (5' 0" x 4' 8").

Antique Pillow-Bagface, Kordi Tribes, Quchan Region, Khorassan ...

Item Ref
BM1966

This beautiful knotted-pile weaving was once a pillow-bag ('balisht' in Persian) albeit now without its plain-weave back. The juxtaposition and natural colour of birds-heads lozenges is simply stunning and this has to be seen to be fully appreciated. The remains of the madder-red plain-weave back can be seen at one end and I have just noticed that there are tiny areas of silk knotting!
Made by Kordi tribes in the Quchan region of Khorassan Province during the last quarter of the 19th century, this stunning weaving is in very good pile condition.
Size: 77cm x 38cm (2' 6" x 1' 3").
