Antique Knife Belt and Purse, Lakai Uzbeks, ...

Item Ref
BM/LK1

I acquired this rare and beautiful knife belt with knife, sheath and small purse in Mashad, north-eastern Iran, approximately 30 years ago and I've had it tucked away in a chest ever since! It is now time to sell it!
Made by Lakai Uzbeks at the end of the 19th century, the belt is very finely embroidered in silk as is the embroidery on the silk purse and knife sheath. The long knife itself, is protected in a leather sheath which slots into the silk embroidered sheath. At each end of the belt, amulets are sewn on, probably as a symbol of protection to the owner.
This is a truly wonderful, rare item and would make a fabulous wall decoration.
Size: The belt is 96cm long x 8cm wide excluding knife sheath and purse. (3' 2" x 3").

The word 'suzani' is a Persian word meaning 'needle'. In Uzbekistan, it refers to a type of embroidered wall-hanging that is used to decorate walls or to conceal niches and shelved alcoves. Suzani embroidery is an urban domestic craft and were made to form part of the bride's dowry.
Suzanis made in the 18th and 19th centuries, today, are highly collectable and fetch tens of thousands of pounds. The suzanis I have recently acquired here, were made during the 20th century, but of high quality and equal to their predecessors. The difference being they are considerably less money and affordable to those who are unable to pay £10,000 GBP upwards!
The suzani illustrated, is silk-embroidered on an ivory silk background - incredible work, natural colours and truly beautiful.
Size: 1.47m x 1.24m (4' 10" x 4' 1").
