This magnificent soumak flat-weave was made by Afshar nomads during the last quarter of the 19th century. It has been in an English private collection since it was acquired in Iran in the 1950s. The soumak weave is superb and the wool is soft and pliable which makes me think it was originally made as a bed-cover or simply a tent floor covering. I have never come across a superb weaving like this before - made in two parts because of the narrow nomadic looms, and then expertly sewn together up the centre. With good underlay, this flat-weave can be used on the floor today in a modern setting and will look amazing. The pale, vegetable-dye, golden-yellow field has to be seen to be fully appreciated. A truly fabulous weaving.
Size: 2.26m x 1.70m (7' 5" x 5' 7").
