Antique Baluch Rug, Bahluli Sub-Tribe, Khorassan Province, ...

Item Ref
BM2232

This is an extremely rare, small rug, symmetrically knotted by the Bahluli tribe of Khorassan Province, north-east Persia circa 1870-1880.
Because of the small, squarish size, it makes me consider that this might have been made as a 'masnad' - a seating rug for the chief of the tribe to sit on.
The woollen pile is soft and lustrous throughout and what is particularly attractive is the myriad of small quadrupeds - deer or gazelle - dominating the field. Note too, the soft, madder-red ground containing a fabulous abrash in the top part of the field and surrounded by one simple, glowing blue main border.
The rug is in excellent condition and whether in the past it might have had kilim skirts, that we will never know!
This rug is unique and I haven't seen another like it.
Size: 1.00 x 0.95m (3' 3" x 3' 1").

BM2112

In near-mint condition, this fabulous Timuri rug has the highest quality soft, shiny wool with highlights of green silk throughout and complete kilim skirts at each end. The central 'tree-of-life' has branches protruding from it and surrounded by a multitude of symbols - stunning and subtle in its drawing. The madder-red main border depicts a continuous vine - symbolically representing the eternal cycle of life.
Made during the last quarter of the 19th century by Sangtschuli tribes on the eastern Persian/western Afghanistan border, it really needs to be seen and handled to fully appreciate the high quality of the work involved. Please look at the close-up photos to see the fabulous natural colours.
This is Timuri weaving at its best!
Size: 2.44m x 1.27m (8' 0" x 4' 2").

Antique Corridor Carpet, Baluch Tribes of Zabol, ...

Item Ref
BM2089

To come across such a narrow antique runner, never mind a Baluch runner these days, only 52cm wide, is truly a rare find!
Made by Baluch tribes in the Zabol area of Sistan Province, south-east Persia circa 1880, this runner is in excellent overall condition and ready to lay in a narrow hallway. The glowing brown-red ground is divided into nine Turkmen 'tshemtshe' guls, often used by the Sistani Baluch in their weavings. Particulary attractive, is the use of a beautiful green in the inner and outer borders as well as being complete with its flatweave and brocaded skirts each end.
Size: 3.05m x 0.52m (10' 0" x 1' 8").

A rare and beautiful Baluch tribal rug in excellent condition made in the Sistan region circa 1880.
Another rug I have been reunited with recently and after 30 years of being enjoyed elsewhere, it is lovely to have it back in the fold!
The unusual ground colour resembles burnt-orange with three central rectangles comprising 'Mushwani' type lozenges. Very finely knotted, the outer 'laleh abassi' border is beautifully drawn and frames the rug in the most stunning way. It is complete with short kilim skirts each end.
Size: 1.70m x 0.94m (5' 7" x 3' 1").

Antique 'Baluch' - Bahluli Tribal Rug, Khorassan ...

Item Ref
BM/MAX2

Rugs of the Bahluli 'Baluch' tribe are recognised by their symmetric-knotting whereas most other tribes in the 'Baluch' tradition, are asymmetrically-knotted.
This rug, made during the last quarter of the nineteenth century by the Bahluli tribe in the region of Qaienat, Khorassan province, eastern Persia, comprises a field of stylised leaves. The main border has a powerful rendition of tribal motifs and the rug is complete with chevron skirts in knotted-pile as opposed to flat-weave technique. Particularly attractive, are the highlights of a natural, light-blue throughout.
The rug is in very good overall condition, albeit with some areas of corroded brown dye, due to the iron mordant effect.
Size: 1.55m x 0.89m (5' 1" x 3' 0").

Sold some 30 plus years ago from my Samarkand Galleries in Stow-on-the Wold, north Cotswolds, I have just been reunited with this unusual Ferdows Baluch rug along with two others.
This rug has a natural camel-hair ground on which 'lightening' patterns dominate the field and surrounded by a blue main border. The rug is in very good condition, dates to circa 1870 and is complete with long kilim skirts at each end.
Size: 1.30m x 0.84m (4' 3" x 2' 9").

Another reunited Baluch rug sold over 30 years ago and nice to have it back. It has a beautiful madder-red ground with an overall small lozenge pattern, disappearing under the borders and out into infinity. The main border has a relatively typical Baluch continuous vine leaf symbolising the eternal cycle of life.
A very elegant and nicely-drawn rug, made circa 1880 in Khorassan province of north-eastern Persia.
Size: 2.00m x 1.20m (6' 6" x 4' 0").

Antique Prayer-Rug, Timuri Tribes, Western Afghanistan.

Item Ref
BM2137

This charming little prayer-rug is, I believe, an extremely rare type, made by a sub-tribe of the Timuri in western Afghanistan, during the early to mid 19th century.
The rug is in remarkable condition for its early age, retaining its plain-weave skirts at each end. The field design comprises three trees in glowing indigo-blue, rising upwards on an early aubergine-dye ground to a pointed mihrab outlined in yellow. Within the mihrab, the dark-brown dye colour has heavily corroded, indicating the dye, possibly pistachio-bark, was heavily mordanted with iron slag.
Particularly attractive is the inner zig-zag minor border, again, highlighted in yellow and the main border, also in that beautiful aubergine colour, depicting small, stylised flowers, highlighted in ivory and providing a powerful presence.
Baluch collectors take note! This is a very collectable little rug and as early in date as can be found. I currently know of no other similar examples published or in private collections worldwide. The rug has to be seen to be fully appreciated as the photos don't do it justice.
I purchased this little rug a year ago in Turkey and have had the pleasure of enjoying it for the past year. Now it is time to be enjoyed by another lucky person!
It should be treasured, hung on the wall and enjoyed.
Size: 1.22m x 1.00m (4' 0" x 3' 3").

The hand-panels contain a simply-drawn 'tree' in each, again on natural camel-hair background.
In excellent condition and dating to circa 1880, this charming little rug retains its original plain-weave ends.

Antique Timuri Main Carpet, Western Afghanistan.

Item Ref
BM660

To Timuri and Baluch collectors, this carpet can only be described as fabulous! Albeit worn in the centre and also with corroded brown, it still glows as the best of Timuri carpets do. Look at the brocaded ends - just magnificent and complete! There is only one small area of repiling in the top right-hand corner where there was a slight ruck due to the tightness of the brocaded skirts, otherwise it is completely original.I hope it goes to a good home - to someone who will treasure it.
Size: 2.19m x 1.44m (7' 2" x 4' 9").

Antique Prayer-Rug, Timuri - Yaqoub Khani Sub-Tribe, ...

Item Ref
BM/RMI

This is undoubtedly the best Timuri Yaqoub Khani namazlyk (prayer-rug) that exists in the world market today. A bold statement, but having handled and being aware of what is in private collections world-wide, I have never seen such a complete and mint-condition piece as this one!
Acquired from a private collection in Mashad in north-eastern Iran last month, I can only guess that this rug was made for an important person at the end of the nineteenth century, possibly hardly used and kept in a 'bokcha' (special dowry bag), totally preserved with its complete brocaded skirts. Amazing!
The extremely finely knotted natural camel-hair field contains the symbolic 'tree-of-life' rising upwards from the underworld, the branches in the earthly world leading to the spiritual realms. The brocaded skirts have highlights of silver and gold thread woven into the nesting birds as can be seen in the close-up photos, indicating this was commissioned by a wealthy member of the tribe, possibly the Khan himself.
This is a hugely important rug and highly collectable.
Size: 1.65m x 0.78m (5' 5" x 2' 7").

This Timuri 'namazlyk' (prayer-rug) is as good as they come! Made circa 1870-1880, the central field incorporates the 'Dokhtar-e-Qazi' shrub and it's possible that this prayer-rug was made by the Dokhtar-e-Qazi sub-tribe. The light areas throughout the rug are knotted in magenta silk which suggests this prayer-rug was made for a very important person within the tribe - possibly the chief himself! This rug incorporates 'trees-of-life' in the upper hand-panels and it retains its original flat-woven skirts at each end.
The rug is in excellent overall condition and pieces like this today in the world marketplace are very rare.
