Description

Two central panels - one madder-red, the other indigo-blue - dominate the field of this lustrous woollen-pile face of what was once a large storage-bag. Made by Kurdish tribes during the second half of the 19th century, the thick pile combined with glorious vegetable colours, provide a stunning design. What is also particularly attractive is the top panel with its depiction of seven full '8' pointed stars together with a rather squashed star on the far right side! There is some minor brown-dye corrosion within a couple of the stars otherwise the bag-face is in remarkably very good condition.
For reference, see the recently published book ‘Nomadic Visions’ by Michael Rothberg where he illustrates a similar piece on page 206 and attributes the ‘joval’ to “South Kurdistan, north of Kermanshah”.
Size: 1.10m x 0.87m (3' 7" x 2' 10").
Viewing by appointment only.
