Description
Salt-bags were made by the majority of the Persian tribes with the purpose of transporting rock-salt and nuts.They were mainly used by shepherds where the rock-salt would be given to the animals to help in the dehydration process. Some salt-bags or namakdan where 'namak' is the Persian word for salt, were coarsely woven and some, like this one, were incredibly fine.
In this case, the namakdan was made by Shahsevan nomads in the environs of Moghan in north-west Persian Azerbaijan around the last quarter 19th century and is in exceptional condition for its age.
