Description
This fabulous gabbeh is illustrated in the latest HALI magazine and featured as 'Gabbeh Art'.It was made by Lori-Bakhtiari nomads in the region of Kohkiluyeh in Luristan around 1900. What I love about this rug is the amazing abrash of colour at the top where the weaver had run out of the glowing tomato-red and had to comprimise with what wool she had available thus creating this work of woven art!
The gabbeh was a rug made for everyday use in the tribal tent, was generally fairly coarsely knotted in lustrous wool and was the creation of the weaver herself. This, therefore, was true nomadic art. Gabbehs were used hard and when worn out were generally discarded. Thus today, gabbehs from the nineteenth century through to the early twentieth century are rare and small-size gabbehs like this are even rarer.
