This beautiful utilitarian bag was used specifically for containing wooden spindles.
The bag is unusually, fully complete, with undyed wool, plain-weave back, braided side-cords and decorated with tassels symbolising good luck.
Made by Yomut Turkmen in the trans-Caspian steppes of Turkmenistan sometime between 1880-1900, the central design on the face comprises a stylised 'tree-of-life'.
Size: 50 x 24cm (1' 8" x 9") excluding tassels.
