Description
Illustrated in my book 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' and sold back in 2002, this beautiful, rare rug has just recently come back to me.Throughout the past 24 years, it has been hanging on a wall in a private house and has retained its natural colour and condition.
Made in the Chondzoresk area of Karabagh sometime in the third quarter nineteenth century, the rug has a wealth of symbolism throughout, including the large, curvilinear dragons in both the dark-green gul and dark-blue gul. Swastikas fill the centre of each gul as protective symbols, ironically breaking evil into four parts, stylised 'birds-heads' lozenges are seen as well as 'eight-pointed stars', stylised birds and animals, amulets for protection and in the lower right-hand corner, a man on horseback.
This is knotted tribal art at its best, a rug that you would never get tired of looking at it!
