Description

Illustrated in my book 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' and sold back in 2002, this beautiful, rare rug has just recently come back to me.
Throughout the past 24 years, it has been hanging on a wall in a private house and has retained its natural colour and condition.
Made in the Chondzoresk area of Karabagh sometime in the third quarter nineteenth century, the rug has a wealth of symbolism throughout, including the large, curvilinear dragons in both the dark-green gul and dark-blue gul. Swastikas fill the centre of each gul as protective symbols, ironically breaking evil into four parts, stylised 'birds-heads' lozenges are seen as well as 'eight-pointed stars', stylised birds and animals, amulets for protection and in the lower right-hand corner, a man on horseback.
This is knotted tribal art at its best, a rug that you would never get tired of looking at it!
Size: 2.70m x 1.53m (8' 10" x 5' 0").
Viewing by appointment only.
