Description
Found on a recent trip, a charming spindle/water-pipe bag made by Lori-Bakhtiari nomads in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia circa 1920.
The ivory ground is woven in two parts, wool on the left side combined with cotton on the right side. A large deer or gazelle is depicted top centre with smaller stylized animals on either side. The three lines either side of the stylised flowers and the 'S' border are all in knotted-pile, as is the thicker line above the animals. The back is simply a continuation of the front face showing the lighter cotton and slightly darker wool in plain-weave.
